Mads Tolling Tribute to Svend Asmussen
Mads Tolling is a Point Richmond Jazz favorite, and this time he brings a very special show,  'A Tribute To Svend' featuring guitarist Jeff Massanari and Owen Clapp on bass - playing the compositions and tunes associated with Svend Asmussen, who from the mid- 1930's into the 21st century, was one of the finest jazz violinists in the world, recording with Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, and Benny Goodman, and was perhaps Denmark's most influential musician of the 20th century.

Mads has sent along this personal note to Point Richmond Jazz fans:

"I am a Danish jazz violinist, 37 years old, and living in the San Francisco Bay Area. I grew up in Copenhagen, Denmark, and after graduating high school I moved to the US, where I finished my degree at Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 2003 I joined bassist Stanley Clarkes band and the celebrated string group, Turtle Island Quartet - a group I won two Grammy Awards with. I have also performed with Kenny Barron, Ramsey Lewis, Chick Corea, Paquito DRivera and Jean-Luc Ponty.

"I now spend most of my time working with my own band, The Mads Tolling Quartet, which consists of violin, guitar, bass and drums. We have released three CDs with guest artists such as Stanley Clarke, Russell Ferrante, Stefon Harris and Kenny Washington. The releases have received rave reviews in the Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, NPR Morning Edition as well as in the Danish Press including Berlingske Tidende and Jazz Special.

"In 2016 I won DownBeat Magazines Critics Poll for Rising Star Violinist.

"A year ago Danish jazz violin legend Svend Asmussen passed away shortly before his 101st birthday. Svend has been a great influence on me. At 15 years old I called him up to ask for lessons, and his advice to me was to listen to Stuff Smith. Quite a few years later I got invited for brunch at his house, and he gave me a big stack of his handwritten music, when he felt it was time to hand it over to the next generation of improvising violinists. A nice gesture I felt, and we have been in touch ever since.

"The last few years I have toured with guitarist Jacob Fischer and my Scandinavian quartet. Jacob was a part of Svend Asmussens quartet for the last 15 years of his life. We have played in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Germany with a total of over one hundred concerts. We celebrated Svends 100 year birthday at the Royal Library in Copenhagen in 2016, and last year we commemorated him as we played at the famous Jazzclub Montmartre in Denmark. To have Jacob in the group created an exciting program with many classic standards including Svends own compositions and arrangements.

"It will be exciting to debut our Svend Asmussen Tribute in North America in 2018. Jacob and I will go to seven cities:

10/17 - Danish Lutheran Church, Calgary
10/18 - Museum of Danish America, Elk Horn, Iowa
10/19 - Nordic Northwest, Portland, OR
10/20 - San Luis Obispo Jazz Federation, CA
10/21 - Santa Barbara Jazz Society, CA
10/22 - Blue Whale, Los Angeles, CA
10/23 - The Black Cat, San Francisco, CA

"We have a CD out: Mads Tolling Quartet, feat. Jacob Fischer - Celebrating Svend Asmussen. You can listen to it and watch videos from the below links. Much of the music features the entire quartet, including bass and drums with a few duo tunes. The sound and the repertoire is more or less the same - duo vs. quartet.

While Jacob unfortunately had to return to Denmark before our Point Richmond show, his chair will be admirably filled by the amazing Jeff Massanari on guitar.
